It was last re-pressed in 2015 (for the first time), a sign I suppose of new fans getting into his forever fresh sounding music, no more so than on this futuristic album. Bandcamp link up now.

There is a new Dopplereffekt remodel included on Digital Entropy by Sheffield's Datashader on Tresor Berlin. I've cropped it to make it readable. While there doesn't seem to be anything directly from the group in the text, written by UK promo company ePM, it's good to know the exact release date (16/12/01) and interesting to see how they were being marketed by Tresor Berlin at the time.

One of the best things about doing DRL has been finding pieces of forgotten or not widely known information or in some cases a whole website, World Techno Nation (circa 2001). Stewart Caig was in touch to say he ran this website. He also ran the UK label Digital Soul which had another Drexciya connection. Before social media, Wikipedia, You Tube and Discogs these fan run websites and forums etc were an essential part of various underground music scenes, especially for Techno.

These Wayback Machine links will take you there

Drexciya biog and discography

Ultradyne and Dopplereffekt live in Detroit 2001 review and Ultradyne interview (more info below)

General Interviews

General Menu

I was looking at the old website for World Techno Nation on the Wayback Machine and one of the most interesting things they had was a review of the Ultradyne and Dopplereffekt show at Eyes Only, Liberal Arts Gallery, Detroit during the DEMF in 2001, which I have written about before. This would have been a very early gig for Dopplereffekt and it seems to have been just Gerald Donald on stage. In the pic (below) you can see the flags from Dopplereffekt's set still up when Ultradyne play. On the same page there is also a good interview with Ultradyne. Interesting to note how important 'Positron Island' was to the beginning of their relationship back in 1993.

'The first sightings of this nebulous Detroit Techno/Electro outfit began during 1991, forming close liaisons with Underground Resistance and Submerge. "Staying low and staying true", each instalment of the mighty Drexciya discography narrates fantastic accounts of conflict and survival in the dark depths of unwritten history chapters; tales of ...yesternow. Swimming with stories of `aquatic funk bombs and `Darthouven Fish Men, Drexciyan philosophy, technology and time travel are very real aspects and vital parts to the project.Recording mainly within the UR, Submerge, Shockwave triumverate, Drexciyan outings with labels outside of Detroit have been rare with the exception of one-offs for Warp and Rephlex. Tresor established contact with Drexciya in 1993 via UR with the release of "Deep Detroit Vol. 2: Magic Tracks Compiled by Juan Atkins" featuring Drexciya´s "Positron Island"; the track which for many European youth would become anthemic, sonically defining the magic that is Detroit. Within the then revolutionary climates found in united Germany and other Eastern European countries finding themselves anew, Drexciya was the sound of originality; music for change and identity. Armed with freestyle Electro, Techno and Funk, Drexciya defies categorization and sounds like ...`Drexciya'.'

One of my readers very kindly shared a photo of the new cover artwork for Tresor Berlin's recent Drexciya reissues. The sentence was in response to being asked to describe the theme of Drexciya; in full he said, “An infinite journey to inner space, within, and find out the beauty that’s inside and bring it out."
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12593207.post-5983772971463317142023-07-14T15:30:00.007+01:002023-08-26T12:20:34.606+01:00Drexciya Day 2023

‘A date for your diaries. At the time it was 15 years old and every year it seems more for the depth of the music that has left us, one of the greatest expressions of Techno Detroit has given us and that today seems even more unreachable. Forte Antenne has given us the opportunity to celebrate it in the Forte Court from 19.00 to 5.00. This time they have selected thirteen of these rare tracks, three of which will be on vinyl for the first time. It will be available from 17th September. You can pre-order a 2LP turquoise coloured vinyl now from WeMe only.

It is also available now to pre-order on regular black 2LP from places like Clone and Juno. It's really great to see a second volume of these being made available and it's something I've been keen to see happen for a long time. To help out I nominated some of the remixes and wrote the promo text as well (below). You can listen to samples of all the tracks at the link above. I've updated the Heinrich Mueller remix/remodel list at this link too, so you can see what is still uncollected on these compilations (ripe for volume 3).

'Its been five years since Belgium’s WeMe Records lovingly selected the first ever collection of Heinrich Mueller’s (Drexciya/Doppleffekt) best remixes/remodels for a new generation of listeners that won’t have to pay collector prices to have them on vinyl. Volume 2 of False Vacuum is now with us and still has riches to choose from. These 13 rare and hard to find tracks (3 of which make their vinyl debut) all deliver in different ways as he systematically reinvents each one.

Beginning with his raw and now classic remix of Ultradyne’s ‘Clones’, the hard-edged dance-floor friendly ‘Woman’s Scent’ by Cisco Ferreira (The Advent), the more laidback and futuristic sounding ‘Bohrium 274’ by Jauzas the Shining and Victoria Lukas, the slow and mysterious and first time on vinyl ‘Somehow’ by Rough Days For Diamond Trade, reinventing the darkest of dance-floors on ‘Rytumtraks 0002’ by Albert van Abbe, the moody masterpiece and first time on vinyl ‘Now We Continue’ by White Car, Duplex’s ‘Autoslug’ sounding like its been rearranged inside a black-hole, a balancing act between the light and darkness on Fasenuova ‘Cachito Turulo’, an insistent rise and falling workout for As One’s ‘Where Did He Go and Why’, a tightly wound and almost meditative ‘The Truth’ by The Exaltics, an angular stomping march of the robots ‘Longwang’ by 6D22, a jumpy fidgety groove for first time on vinyl ‘Forty Eight Hours’ by Yan Wagner and perhaps one of his most sublime pieces is kept for last with ‘So Long For A Small Storm’ by Dollska.'

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12593207.post-9369718613737016242023-07-04T15:50:00.006+01:002023-07-04T15:51:25.575+01:00New James Stinson pic, L.A.M., Clarence & Glass Domain reissues, Arpanet & Dopplereffekt live and more

One of my readers kindly let me know they had shared a Submerge distribution catalogue from 1994 on their Instagram and FB accounts. I gave it a quick look (quite small online) and wondered who was in the UR photo. I checked the full-size image and recognised a very rare sighting of James Stinson, referred to in the text as '1 Militant Sea Dweller'.

The manoeuvres UR were on would most likely have been their trip to New York's New Music Seminar in 1991 or perhaps '92 (when UR played live). In the 2017 Red Bull Music about this legendary first visit (where they all wore UR T-shirts) both Terrence Parker and Agent X were definitely there. If this is correct it's interesting to know that James was part of the crew from even before Drexciya's debut Deep Sea Dweller EP was released or certainly by '92 (which obviously 'sea dweller' references).

This was a hugely important event for UR to make their mark on the industry and it's even when they met people from Tresor for the first time (at '91 event). As you can see they all look like they were having a great time.

Please look for similar stuff in your collections!

Clone Records have re-pressed the full trilogy of pre-Drexciya releases. Clarence's Hyperpace Sound Lab 12" EP, Life After Mutation's Balance of Terror 12" EP and Glass Domain's s/t titled 12" EP. They are all available now from clone.nl and all good record stores

There is a free Arpanet show in Paris on 16th July. It is part of a Post-Web conference. You have to RSVP them, more details here and it says 'futuristic/cosmic/cybernetic costumes encouraged'.

Dopplereffekt play Bristol at a festival on 30th September.

This is a really good and brand new James Stinson and Gerald Donald mix by Phil Lucas. He also wrote a text to go with it, some of which is below, enjoy.

One of my readers tipped me off to this excellent remix of Dopplereffekt's 'Satellites' by Glasgow's Fear-E. It's also make your own price/free if you want to download from Bandcamp.

Clone Records are celebrating 31 years and will be releasing a new boxset compilation Sonic Transmutations. It's quite a line-up and well done to them. From a DRL perspective, Dopplereffekt rarity 'Dyson Sphere' is included. It was last seen on vinyl in 2012 on an obscure Spanish festival compilation. You can sample all the tracks from the comp at this link.

The All Trades and Prieste5s collaborative EP is now available. They won a contest run by Brighter Sound to tie in with Drexciya Day in Manchester last year. As well as digital there is a limited run 12" dubplate w/ A3 Artwork by Abu Qadim Haqq on Bandcamp.

Ayana V. Jackson has a new Drexciya inspired art show on at Washington's Smithsonian from now until 29th Jan 2024. This is the second stage of her project, From the Deep: In the Wake of Drexciya, that I've shared and I continue to be in awe of the lengths she has gone to realise her vision.

A fan has made an AI generated animated extension of the cover of The Other People Place's Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe on YouTube. If you've ever wanted to hear and see more of that forest and see what might be in that room then enjoy the ride. Look out for the Drexciya logo, I missed it the first time I watched. This now iconic artwork was created by The Designers Republic and released on Warp Records in 2001.

I wrote a review of A Sphere of Water Orbiting a Star by The Otolith Group at Galway Arts Centre that you can read at this link (exhibition runs until 1st July). The show is very much inspired and informed by Drexciya and the voice of Gerald Donald is featured in both films. The subject of their origin story and more is raised. Well worth a visit if you can, if not I hope the review can suffice.

'Drexciya's Aquatic Invasion was one of the first records Koreman purchased, he told Resident Advisor, and he tried repeatedly to commission a remix from members James Stinson and Gerald Donald in the late '90s, with no success. After a few conversations with Mike Banks, Koreman received a message on his answering machine saying, "Drexciya don't have no phone, but they are too busy to do your remix." '

Back in 2017 Drvg Cvltvre released a 12" EP H-World: Recolonization that was inspired by Drexciya. I did share it here on the DRL FB page at the time but not this part of the article for Resident Advisor. There are still copies in stock at clone.nl too.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12593207.post-23852833042460228312023-05-08T12:10:00.002+01:002023-05-08T12:11:10.834+01:00Gerald Donald guide on Accolades, The Otolith Group in Galway preview and more

A video interview with DJ Prime Cuts of Scratch Perverts talking to Crate Records about the music of Gerald Donald for their Accolades series (12 mins). The particular section used for the trailer (1 min) is actually really interesting because you can hear Gerald Donald talking about the origins and nature of Drexciya/Drexciyans.

I've updated the Discography post on DRL and have now included official stream and digital download links as well. Its been designed as an 'at a glance' guide to Drexciya and all the other related projects I cover here. It's everything I'm aware of and when it was first and last pressed. If there's anything I've missed please let me know, enjoy.

"Between ’98 and ’06 I was working menial jobs and doing minimal production, but nothing that was released with the exception of a mix I did on Ken’s first 12″. They have been compiling the cream of his remix/remodel work since 2018. Vol. 1 is sold out but you can check it out here.

DJ Mag has a new long read about Drexciya. It was written by Ben Cardew and he takes his starting point as The Quest and gives an excellent overview of their career as well as putting their music in the context of today. He also looks at the development of their mythology and includes plenty of James Stinson quotes, well worth your time.

Dopplereffekt have a live show at RSO, Berlin on 27th April with visuals by Maria Mendes (who made the cover art and more for Neurotelepathy). For the record they also played a show in Oslo on 31st March.

Gedankenexperiment's Experiment Defined 12" EP is now reissued on vinyl with one extra track, 'Radiation Vacuum', on Spain's Apena Records. This collaboration between Heinrich Mueller and Beta Evers was originally released on WeMe Records in 2011. You can sample all the tracks on the Juno player and at many more other online shops.

A New York show by MIROVAYA LINIYA and others was streamed and you can watch it at this link. Their show starts around 17 mins.

I came across the rare 1994 Mike Banks/Underground Resistance cover story for Jockey Slut at this link.

DeForrest Brown Jr. has made an impressive two hour Drexciya themed mix ('The Myth of Drexciya') with an interview to go with it for Carhartt Work In Progress. At the end of the mix there is a brief excerpt from Hydra Decapita (2010) by The Otolith Group where you can hear ‘The Author’ aka 'Remnant of a Hydrogen Element' aka Gerald Donald speaking about Drexciya which is followed by the rare Dopplereffekt track 'Ascension of Genetic Intelligence' (preview edit of track here).

I thought this part of Brown's interview was also important to note and archive here:

'From what I understand, James Stinson was very intentional when he talked to journalists and how that interacted with the maps, liner notes, and track titles of each release. In my conversations with Gerald Donald, I found that the scientific potentiality of Drexciya was a philosophical theory similar to how Plato used the lost city of Atlantis as a way of thinking about societies outside of Athens on a kind of game board. This type of game theory and speculative fiction is what initially attracted me to techno – as a writer, avid listener, and musician, I wanted to explore the world that they built together while jamming in Stinson's mother's basement.'

One of my readers kindly brought these early Drexciya reviews to my attention. They both come from Music Week. The Deep Sea Dweller EP review was penned by Loftgroover aka Tony Collins and Bubble Metropolis was reviewed by DJ and producer Steve Bicknell. The date of the magazine can also give us a better idea of what time of the year they were released. Assuming these were new when reviewed I would now put DSD at about Oct/Nov '92 and Bubble Metropolis at May/June '93.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12593207.post-24761441016696213222023-01-23T14:09:00.006+00:002023-02-08T14:09:12.237+00:00Abstract Thought and Shifted Phases albums reissued after 20 years

Clone Records have announced they are reissuing and are now taking pre-orders for Hypothetical Situations (2003) by Abstract Thought. There seems to initially be a limited orange double vinyl edition exclusive to clone.nl (one per customer). They say it's also possible to pre-order regular black as well (promo text below). Expected release date is 27th Feb. Order from them here and on Bandcamp.

This is very long awaited reissue and was one of Drexciya's Storm Series. Back in October DRL ran some posts about the album (scroll down) and maybe this got a dialogue going with the original label Kombination Research or else it has been in the pipeline for sometime as this is its 20th anniversary, either way it's great to have the album widely available again for new and old fans.

On I think the same day Tresor opened the pre-order for the equally long awaited Shifted Phases album, The Cosmic Memoirs of the Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope (2002) (more info below). That makes all but one (Tranllusion's L.I.F.E.) of Drexciya's Storm Series to have now been reissued since first release and some very recently. This is great news and it has been a long journey for the fans who year after year created the demand which the labels have fulfilled.

'Re-issue of Drexciya's 4th storm! Rosinthrope (2002) in special edition form. It comes with new artwork by Matthew Angelo Harrison and the vinyl is now in triple with CD extra tracks 'Alien Distress Call' and 'Crossing Of The Sun-Ra Nebula' included. It comes in silver and regular black vinyl editions as well as CD (available 31st March). They have also written notes just for this release which I've included below.

'In early 2023, Tresor Records will reissue the sole output from Shifted Phases entitled The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope. Initially released in 2002, soon after James Stinson passed away, this LP plays a mysterious and compelling role in the Drexciya journey. While other records of Drexciya and related projects have received numerous reprints and editions, The Cosmic Memoirs... has remained out of print since its release. This rarity leaves it more open to interpretation with its place in the Drexciyan storm series, as it became increasingly hard to find and underexplored.

Track titles Solar Wind, White Dwarf, and Lonely Journey of the Comet Bopp reveal a focus on cosmic realms, suggesting a link with the Drexciya LP Grava 4 that moves from the underwater to the galactic. As it launches with mechanical blows on a precise orbit, each repetition entrenches the gravitational pull in the galaxy of Shifted Phases. In many places, it sounds like the readout of frequencies harvested from outer space, pockmarked with packet loss from the millions of kilometres distance travelled.

The music is hard to contain, intuitively restless in motion through its unfolding universe and achingly resonant. It shapeshifts across affectedly melodic sequences such as in Lonely Journey..., to the sparse, hard-hitting timbres found in Alien Vessel Distress Call and the mangled reverse vocals in The Freak Show, somewhat reminiscent of another Drexciya side-project, Glass Domain. The mythology of Drexciya is evident in how keenly James Stinson and Gerald Donald created their imaginary worlds. In Crossing Of The Sun-Ra Nebula, there is an undisputable reference to another Afro-futurist who delved deep into a galaxy of their own making.

This reissue does not merely close the loop on Tresor's reissue series of the Drexciya catalogue but brings Shifted Phases to fresh ears more than other records. Accompanied by newly commissioned artwork from Matthew Angelo Harrison, the 3xLP vinyl reissue also features the tracks Crossing Of The Sun-Ra Nebula and Alien Vessel Distress Call, which were previously only on the original CD release.'

Julia Pello and Heinrich Mueller's Mirovaya Liniya have a rare live show in New York on 5th February. You fall in love with an artist. You dream of one day working with them. Just somehow getting close to their sound, finding a way to combine your visions or just hang out. Either one will do. In this case, the artist was Gerald Donald aka Der Zyklus, aka one half of Dopplereffekt and Drexciya and Arpanet. Nobody is more foundational and inspirational to what we all do. It simply does not get more legit. Or more mysterious/elusive/harder to reach. Specifically I don’t even think I would make the music I make without hearing records like “pornoactress”. THEN…. The real thrill of the conversation, the back and forth, the real A&R of starting with “holy shit imagine a Der Zyklus mix of Easy” and then GETTING exactly what you dreamed of….. the absolute funkiest, dopest, zero bullshit, godfather, ground zero electro funk track. The text was probably written by Cisco Ferreira of The Advent who runs the label or perhaps the distributor. I have never seen it before but there was a white label sent out a few months before the album was actually released. This is one of Drexciya's Storm series and has never been re-pressed and is of course most highly sought after. Nice to have this additional message archived anyway.

'Important: Please try to respect that the members of "Abstract Thought" are not willing to be profiled in a feature because they want their music to be the centre of interest. We treated this release with the upmost respect. And only did a 2000 unit limited run. So anyone who has this in their collection 👏🏻👏🏻, Kombination Research (KR) was originally a label I started to releases only my The Advent solo music, I became very good friends with Drexciya over the 90’s and my KR B-sides were very much Drex Influenced. This ‘hypothetical Situations’ project was a complete honour when I received the Demo for release. Recently during the pandemic I was approached to maybe re releases this from last remaining Drexicyian, but unfortunately the master DATs are completely destroyed with Tape erosion....The CD’s were all in MP3 format, This was an early time in digital that MP3 were mostly used instead of WAV files at CD pressing plants.'

"I talked to them (Drexciya), we argued about some things. The exhibits featured two historic faxes sent by UR to Tresor regarding Drexciya. I was kindly sent the images by a fan and am not sure if they have already been shared by others online but now that the exhibition is over I thought it would be okay to archive them here.

As you can see Mike Banks was writing to let Carola Stoiber at Tresor know that Drexciya were reunited after their hiatus/break in late '95 (this break was only made known with the release of The Quest in '97). It's interesting to note the date of the first fax was 12th January 1999 as Neptune's Lair was released by Tresor in November '99. It's also interesting that even at this stage they were offering a multi-album deal. The 'Storm Series' is not mentioned but it might already have been in James' mind. We don't know if Tresor signed just NL first or went ahead and did the multi deal. Regardless, Tresor would release multiple albums in the coming years, including Drexciya's Harnessed The Storm, the first Transllusion album and the Shifted Phases album along with 12" EPs from all of these albums. I love the excitement evident in Mike's message and even in the writing and exclamation points of Carola's response.

The second fax is more detailed and obviously in response to the first (or Tresor's follow-up with details of the deal) and again Mike is writing and even appears to be seated with James Stinson at the time. Again the language Mike uses is infectiously enthusiastic. It's interesting to note that even at this early stage they had the artist in mind for the artwork (Abdul Haqq). The British based labels Mike mentions could be Rephlex and Warp but whatever issues James had with them must have been resolved as both he and Gerald Donald would go on to work with both again (Transllusion, The Other People Place, Dopplereffekt, Arpanet etc). Unless he is referring to UK labels that licenced a track for a compilation or something?

When Carola Stoiber was interviewed by Red Bull Music Academy in 2018 she spoke about travelling to Detroit and meeting James at Belle Isle Park. If this was still concerning Neptune's Lair the visit must have happened later on in 1999 or if it concerned the multi-album deal it could have been the following year or later.

It's great to see these faxes and to get a sense of the times and how they returned as Drexciya.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12593207.post-15918565597378794252022-08-14T15:50:00.014+01:002022-08-27T10:26:14.562+01:00Drexciya Day 2022, Dopplereffekt Recomposite and James Stinson tribute by Scape One

Drexciya Day Events

Manchester 3rd September

Helsinki 3rd September

Humpty Records Saarbrücken, Germany 3rd September

Spin Beer & Record Shop, Rome, Italy 3rd September

The 20th anniversary of James Stinson's death will be in less than a months time, 3rd September. They have an amazing line-up and it also ties in with two artists (All Trades and Prieste5s) being commissioned by Brighter Sound to produce new music. I will add any new event into this post.

There is what is called a 'Dopplereffekt Recomposite' of 'Cameo', the new single by Kavinsky. It's almost a conventional remix in that the vocal is very much intact but the music is very Dopplereffekt. It doesn't seem to be available on vinyl but can be streamed and downloaded at this link and others. Kavinsky is label-mates with Arpanet on Record Makers and back in 2006 Arpanet reworked 'Nightdrive'.

One of my readers pointed out an early tribute to James Stinson by Scape One aka Kurt Baggaley. He's talking about how some of Autechre's early music would be rejected by Warp and it took two years before their debut Incunabula (1993) was compiled from what was accepted. This section starts at 1hr 28min 50sec.

"I remember at the time, just after Drexciya 2 (1993) came out...and that was the first Drexciya record I'd heard so I went to Rob Mitchell (RIP) at Warp and said, have you heard this Drexciya shit it's fucking fire, it's like amazing, you need to sign them. I don't know where they are or anything about them...and he was like, no, it's too retro. The sleek mathematical models of 2017’s Cellular Automata have evolved into these synaptic interpretations, transferences and modifications, rejecting binary expectations to meditate on the possibilities and pitfalls of what’s to come.

With their second LP and fifth release in total on Leisure System, the duo of Rudolf Klorzeiger and To-Nhan have themselves achieved a near-telepathic capacity for collaborative thought and mechanical construction. They continue to use live appearances to present experimental trials of theoretical models, and that effort is heard in the sizzle and swing of the percussive highlights here, programmed with a serious depth and wriggle that reflect both an extension of and return to form. Considerations of the machine-human interface, neurological realities and physical probabilities dominate. But these tracks are economical and precise, glittering with emotional depth and cinematic effects. The album's core, a three-act movement of symphonic uncertainty and revelation, marks one of the pair's most evocative compositions in a career full of them.

Territory is monitored, traced and scanned, resulting in unexpected modulations. Underlying systems are questioned, competing mindsets animated and mutated: brain-to-brain, brain-to-machine and beyond. Neurotelepathy processes these transformative mental, psychological and transgenerational states both traumatic and triumphant.'

Leisure System will also issue Cellular Automata (2017) on CD for the first time, it's out on June 10th and can be pre-ordered on Bandcamp.

Dopplereffekt were one of the artists who took part in a show to celebrate 30 years of Tresor on Arte. You can watch their 32 min opening performance at this link. It's great to see and hear them filmed in such quality (they are in a studio with no audience).

A new collaborative audio visual project between Heinrich Mueller and Julia Pello has just been announced. They are using the name World Line / Mirovaya Liniya and there are currently three tracks on their Bandcamp page. They seem to be following the poetic theme of Zerkalo (Julia Pello was a member). Great to see them working together again.

It's possible that US sci-fi series Man From Atlantis (1977-1978) was another early influence on the underwater world of Drexciya. James Stinson would have been around 8 when it first aired (there were 4 TV movies and a 13 part series). I've previously written about The Abyss, Battle of the Planets and Sealab 2020 in this context. An outline of the story concept is below.

'Mark Harris is the lone survivor of the legendary sunken continent of Atlantis. Having adapted to life underwater, Mark possesses webbed hands, light-sensitive eyes, and the ability to swim at low depths in the sea for long periods. He draws strength from water and can overpower most ordinary men. Mark assists an institute for undersea research operated by his human friends, Dr. Elizabeth Merrill and C.W. Crawford, and joins Dr. Merrill in several exploratory missions aboard a high-tech submarine. They encounter several bizarre phenomena, including portals leading to other dimensions, a substance capable of altering personalities, an impish creature whose touch causes a mental return to childhood, and the scheme of a portly millionaire, Mr. Schubert, to melt the polar icecaps.'

Some of this certainly sounds familiar; a humanoid adapted to life underwater, a research lab, an aqua wormhole, strange phenomena and a Dr. Blowfin type character. You can even spot a prominent sea snake in this video of the opening credits.

Drexciya and Deltron 3030 are the main subjects of this excellent piece by Nathan Evans for Key Mag.

A really wonderful new fan made video for Glass Domain's 'Interlock' from 1991. Image and text comes from Bleep.com. The regular black vinyl reissue of Japanese Telecom's Virtual Geisha (2001) by Clone Records is also now available in all good record shops.

'14 years since it was originally released on Rephlex Records, WeMe Records give Dopplereffekt's 'Calabi Yau Space' the reissue treatment, following their excellent reissue of 'Linear Accelerator'.

Here, eight analogue experiments referencing deep space exploration, theoretical physics and the supernatural are brought into focus. When first released, the tracks were perceived by some as Dopplereffekt at their most challenging and avant, standing out from the quintessential beat-driven electro sound they were known for. The tracks have an experimental focus and are at times completely free of rhythm, with shifting layers and discordant melodies achieving a rich, austere timbre. Close your eyes and turn it up for maximum effect as the precision sound engineering acts as a kind of eyelid cinema. It's certainly a departure as 'Calabi Yau Space' falls neatly into the lineage of deep experimental listening, and is more reminiscent of Schultzian Tangerine Dream or the Radiophonic Workshop than the fetish electro Dopplereffekt is best known for.

An essential record and a joyous outlier for Dopplerfekkt fans, and a great voyage for all fans of Techno in the sense that the term was originally intended.'

Dopplereffekt provided the 'Phones Down Finale Mix' on Afrodeutsche's The People's Party on BBC Radio 6 Music. Dopplereffekt too are confirmed for a festival in Portugal (17th August).

Wavejumpers is a new group featuring Tyree Stinson (ex-Aquanauts), their debut release The Sunken Treasure EP on Underground Resistance will be released in late March/early April according to Rubadub. You can pre-order and sample all five tracks from it at this link. There is even a video interview with them at 56 min here.

I found this excellent video from 2013 where Jessy Lanza discusses her love of Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe by The Other People Place.

I've updated my 2014 post on Heinrich Mueller's remixes/remodels. I've included everything I know about for sure with links to play every track. There are now 42 of them and essentially he creates something unique to the original in most cases. The first was in '96 for Scan X and the latest was in 2018 for Death in Vegas. If you know of any I've missed please let me know, enjoy!

This is an epic 2018 interview with DJ Stingray for DJ Mag. Some sample text below...

'Sherard tells of a folder of plans and designs a freshly inspired Stinson gave him during this time, which he’s never shown in public. Sadly, these plans never came to fruition, as Stinson passed away of a heart defect aged just 32. “I took the Drexciya off my name out of respect,” explains Sherard. “I never wanted people to think, ‘Who is this clown riding off the back of Drexciya’s legacy?’ I wanted to show eternal respect and gratitude. He got me onto the world stage and I probably wouldn’t never have made it as a DJ to this stage otherwise. It wasn’t something I was after.”'

It seems like Drexciya saw each of their projects as existing in different dimensions from each other with perhaps The Other People Place being the most literal example of this. For the Storm Series they created the 'Dimensional Waves' production company and James Stinson talked about this as a way to 'wave jump' from label to label around the world as well. 'Dimensional Glide' (2001) by Transllusion could be a reference to this process, an evolution of their 'Wavejumper' track and concept from 1995.

So it could make sense to see Drexciya, Lab Rat XL, Transllusion, Shifted Phases, Abstract Thought, Jack Peoples and even Elecktroids as existing in different dimension from each other. Gerald Donald, as quoted as The Author aka Remnant of a Hydrogen Element in the film, Hydra Decapita (2010) by The Otolith Group has also talked about Drexciya in these terms, 'There is no more Drexciyan dimension. That dimension is closed. Like a wormhole, like a stargate. So this final information you read here is just remnants of a possible possibility that could have happened.'

One of my readers kindly shared this press release/info sheet and as it's not on Discogs or anywhere else online I'm archiving it here. This came with the vinyl album (there was a shorter press release that came with a four track promo 12" EP).

'A coffee table album for the cyber generation or music that can change by sonic revolution?

"Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe" is the work of an infamous and highly regarded techno artist from Detroit. It might be a little confusing as he has collaborated so often but what I am focusing on here tend to be a one-off single track or one time only projects. You can find his usually more long lived group orientated collaborative projects at this discography link (eg. Black Replica, Zerkalo, Gedankenexperiment, Dark Body Parameter etc) but there is some overlap for sure. I just think these listed tracks have fallen through the cracks of categorisation a bit and deserve to be more widely known.

The way this list is designed to work is if you click on the first line you will be brought to the track audio and info about the release itself is included underneath. There is a special limited edition silver double vinyl from this link only. Black vinyl edition is also now available to pre-order from most online shops including Clone. It will be available to ship about 11th Feb 2022. This has not been available since 2007 and was originally released on Rephlex Records. In 2020 WeMe reissued Dopplereffekt's Linear Accelerator in a similar way. Great to see this album available again for new and old fans.

Arpanet will play a live show on Fri 8th April 2022 at Liverpool's very cool IWF Substation venue (Invisible Wind Factory).

If you prefer getting your music from Bandcamp, the new Arpanet 12" from 30D Records is now available there on vinyl and digital. Available from most online shops too, press info below...

'Arpanet needs no introduction for those who know. Hydrostatic Equilibrium EP is a reissue of the 2 tracks released by 30D Records from the Detroit artist back in 2018 (cat# 30D-006), now presented together in a special limited edition single sided 12" vinyl. The EP includes the original tracks Supernova Remnant and Main Sequence Star, being the only two tracks produced by Arpanet since 2006.

Presented with a new artwork, designed by Arpanet himself, and this time on 30D Records sub label ExoPlanets, Hydrostatic Equilibrium EP becomes an instant collectors must have, especially after the quick sell out that followed the 2018 release and the numerous reissue requests received since then.'

One of my readers tipped me off about this excellent interview with Helena Hauff for OpenLab (Escape Pods hosted by Ralph Lawson & Ben Randm). She selects some incredible tracks for her journey through space including Transllusion's 'Bump It', which sparked an hilarious conversation about high pitched alien voices. This section starts about 49min but you will definitely want to listen to the whole thing, recommended.

DJ Bone tells some Drexciya stories on this radio show he made: Mutated Machines - A Journey Through Detroit Techno. Starts at 9 min, but the whole show is worth a listen.

If Drexciya were fans of Star Trek it's quite likely they enjoyed Seaquest DSV (Deep-submergence vehicle), an underwater sci-fi show from the US which ran from 1993-'96 (the period of The Quest compilation). This video compiles the intro to all three seasons and some of the lines are very Drexciyan indeed.

'The series follows the adventures of the high-tech submarine seaQuest DSV 4600, a deep submergence vehicle operated by the United Earth Oceans Organization (UEO), a global coalition of up-world countries and undersea confederations, similar to the United Nations.'

"I never thought for one minute that Drexciya would inspire Afrofuturism. Me and James thought this one thing up about the slaves getting tossed overboard and having a baby underwater and never thought it would be the catalyst. So I learned to just keep my mouth shut and never tell people what the record really is about because sometimes our view is too dark. Other people took it and saw it another way. That was cool, we needed that, we needed them to do that because our shit was fucked up."

Mike Banks speaks a little about Drexciya (51 mins) in this panel interview from 2021 and sheds a bit more light on the collective nature of what has become their most well known and loved mythology. The whole interview is of course worth your time.

If you are interested in tracing and understanding the development of what has become the most well known and dominant mythology associated with Drexciya you will enjoy this link to a PDF of Kodwo Eshun's More Brilliant Than The Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction (1998).

As many of you know, originally the 'pregnant African slaves thrown overboard' mythology was written only as a possible origin story by UR's The Unknown Writer (with input from Mike Banks and James Stinson) in the CD sleeve notes of The Quest in 1997. Mike Banks refers to it above and how its been embraced by so many others since then and become more of a collective mythology.

On page 102 of the PDF (pg. 83 if you have a physical copy) you will find 'Liquid Dystopia'. For years this text was also one of the very few available about Drexciya online at Phinnweb and Global Darkness.

With so little information about Drexciya and so few interviews, right up until the Storm Series really, these pieces in physical and online form of what Eshun called his sonic fiction would have been a major influence on other journalists and fans at the time.

In 2017, Mike Rubin in Infinite Journey to Inner Space: The Legacy of Drexciya, talked to Eshun specifically about this subject and he explained his sonic fiction process in relation to Drexciya. This is something that fans have been doing ever since (including The Unknown Writer and of course myself). His full answers are worth reading (article linked in comments) but I thought this section gets to the core of it.

“It was a world that was only being filled in partially, track by track, and you were doing a lot of that navigating, with the help of the music and the track titles. In a sense, to be a Drexciya fan was to build the mythos by yourself.”- Kodwo Eshun

This powerful and poetic mythology has given a key to so many people to understand (or misunderstand) Drexciya but most importantly to discover their music and then decide for themselves what it might be all about.

Drexciya themselves did appear to settle their origin once and for all in the Grava 4 (2002) sleeve notes. 'Earth has finally discovered Utopia (Drexciya Home Universe).' I like to think this more deep space rather than deep sea origin still leaves space for interactions with African slaves thrown overboard from their underwater base on Earth but like Eshun, it's up to all of us to figure out how the narrative/sonic fiction fits, everyone will find their own meanings and do it differently.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12593207.post-89727720085797824842021-11-19T16:52:00.000+00:002021-11-19T16:52:11.332+00:00Japanese Telecom's Virtual Geisha reissued, Arpanet live, Drexciya info and more

Clone Records' Aqualung label is reissuing Japanese Telecom's Virtual Geisha album from 2001. I have been calling this one of Gerald Donald's best albums for a long time now so this is major (its been out of press for about 20 years as first released on Gigolo Records). They have already reissued the self-titled Japanese Telecom 12" from 1999. Right now it's only available on purple vinyl (limited to just 100 copies) but I assume it will be followed by a full release. It will be available from 31st Jan 2022 but can be pre-ordered now on Bandcamp and the clone.nl website here. Love the new cover too.

Very nice to see a new Arpanet date announced (the first in a long time). It's not until 1st Jan 2022 but in case anyone wants to plan a New Year's trip to Berlin I thought I'd mention it now. Hopefully more to follow. There is a Dopplereffekt live show too but that is not until April 2022 in Mexico.

Ghostly International have commissioned a brief history of Dopplereffekt and Gerald Donald by DeForrest Brown, Jr.

This is a new 2 our mix curated by Dopplereffekt for DUSK.

This is an excellent new Drexciya and Detroit vinyl mix. These Italian fans have supported Drexciya Day every year since it began in 2017.

One of my eagle eyed readers noticed Drexciya listed for a London New Year's Eve event in 2000 (cutting from Muzik). I assume they never played but I guess the rest did. It was quite a line-up. They would have been on Tresor by now (Neptune's Lair came out the year before) but it looks like there was a plan to have them over as part of this UR showcase.

"When it was time I started hooking up with friends trying different styles until one night I could not sleep, cold sweat, tossing and turning and around 3am September 18, 1989 I stood up and said Drexciya. It felt like a tidal wave rushing across my brain. All kinds of ideas were coming out. I could not stop it and I would not stop it. For the next three years we worked hard to perfect Drexciya before we would release it onto the world. Getting into production was not quick. It took a year of experimenting."

This James Stinson quote comes from Techno Tourist (Feb 2002) in a piece by John Osselaer. I've often wondered why he gave such a specific date for coming up with the name Drexciya and I'm not saying this is the reason at all but it's an interesting coincidence I think (I've previously speculated it connects to the release of the movie The Abyss).

I discovered that the issue of Time magazine that week (dated 11th Sept) ran a cover story on the drug problems in Detroit and in the wider US and how community groups were trying to solve it. The woman on the cover, Rantine McKesson, even lived in his part of the city (Seven Mile-Van Dyke on the east-side). It's quite possible he read it.

The article may well have nothing to do with his naming of Drexciya but at this link below you can read the story in full (pages 24-28) and at least get a picture of what it was like for him growing up at that time and why he might have wanted to create an alternate reality (he would have just turned 20).

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12593207.post-89083856348281675032021-10-17T13:13:00.005+01:002021-10-19T16:10:26.204+01:00New Dopplereffekt tracks, Drexciya Day, old stories and more

There are three new tracks up on Dopplereffekt's Bandcamp page since my last post here.

Tiga interviewed DJ Hell for his Last Party On Earth podcast and it's a real treat to hear some of the ins and outs and ups and downs of International DeeJay Gigolos. It was on the RM FB page and I've decided to archive it here as well. You can order Arpanet's two Record Maker albums here.

'In 1999 I started writing to Gerald Donald via email. His band Dopplereffekt had just released "Gesamtkunstwerk" the compilation of their first singles, and I got in touch in order to distribute it. Gerald was renowned for being hard to communicate with, I had no problem with that, I even enjoyed his cryptic messages a lot.

A couple of years later, I had just started Record Makers and suddenly I received a mysterious DAT tape which appeared to be from Gerald. His first solo album under the moniker Arpanet : "Wireless Internet". The music was mindblowing. I felt its addictive power instantly. My kind of record, definitely.

When you run a label, you better have a deal with the artist, otherwise you expose yourself to a lot of complexity. And before I sign a deal I like to meet in person.

Visiting Berlin, where Gerald was based back then, I proposed a date. Before we actually met, I had to follow his precise instructions, go to a special restaurant where I found the address of another cafe, where from I had to make a call to a phone booth, and so on. Wtf, is he a secret agent as well? Once in front of the man, I was impressed. He was strange, kind and passionate. Since 2017 fans around the world have been celebrating his music on or around this date on what has become known as Drexciya Day. Due to COVID-19 last year there was only two physical events (Rome & Weimar) and no doubt this year will also be very different due to restrictions, so perhaps some people might want to organise online or radio events instead or get more creative. Whatever you do please stay safe!

As ever there is no pressure from DRL as this concept originally happened spontaneously from fans and I simply remind people about it and promote whatever anyone feels like doing that year.

So far over the last five years there have been events in Tallinn, Vienna, Cambridge, London, Dublin, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow, Reykjavik, Grenoble, Rome, Manchester, Turin, Thessaloniki, Weimar and on radio (hope I didn't leave any out). There is no guarantee that the same people will do it again in these places, best to go ahead and organise it yourself if you want (as soon as I get confirmation of one I will post details here).

Search online for previous Drexciya Days to get ideas. If anyone wants to organise something please let me know and I will be very happy to share it. Email or contact me through the DRL FB page with an FB event link or whatever. Please use #drexciyaday2021 for your events. Thanks

France's TV Showw has made a rather remarkable Drexciya and Yellow Magic Orchestra mixtape. I've commented here before how they both have a lot in common and that YMO must have been an influence on both James Stinson and Gerald Donald. Elecktroids, Clarence, Dopplereffekt, Japanese Telecom and even JS phone interviews also turn up in the mix, obviously a lot of work went into this one.

This is a very fascinating new piece by John Eperjesi for Selector that connects Drexciya with Herman Melville's Moby Dick. It has useful Drexciya video links for those new to the band as well.

There is an exclusive new Heinrich Mueller track 'Plasma Field' on a limited boxset from Vinylograph. Available on Bandcamp here.

You can now pre-order both Wireless Internet (2LP & CD from 2002) and Inertial Frame (2LP & CD from 2006) by Arpanet at a brand new Bandcamp page. It must have been set up by Record Makers and will be very useful for those of you who prefer to get your music this way (all the tracks can be sampled or downloaded too). Physical copies will be ready to ship on 6th September.

"We sold a lot of music to Europeans that we couldn't give away during the rest of the year...Tearing up bins like flesh, I actually filmed the bins, people grabbing titles. It's actually from a four track promo 12" EP. It's very interesting to see the date of release, which by chance would turn out to be just eight days before the 9/11 attacks but even stranger is that it's exactly a year to the day before James Stinson's very tragic early death (he was about to turn 33).

This album was the start of what he called the Storm Series, seven albums (there would actually be eight in total) that would be released around the world in one year. As it turned out, the final album (Lab Rat XL) would be released on 27/10/03 (just under two years since the release of TOPP).

These promo copies of TOPP were available a month before in August. The opening typeface of the press release/info sheet looks like something Warp might have already used for Autechre. It's also made very clear this is a solo release and there are so many hints that it's something to do with Drexciya.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12593207.post-65289687716701161302021-05-19T13:16:00.006+01:002021-05-19T18:46:53.241+01:00Dark Matter: A History of Afrofuture, BBC4, Black Assembly, Dopplereffekt and K1, The Quest poster and more

Along with many other artists, Drexciya are included in Dark Matter: A History of the Afrofuture on BBC4 on Sun 23rd May 9pm (details here). I did find one studio track, 'Time Stands Still', on their Soundcloud. Their section starts about 47 min and they play about five tracks and then there is a short interview.
